In fact, the average car owner probably doesn't even think about what their beautiful new tires with the fancy white letters are actually mounted on... until they lose one of those "shiny things" in the middle of one tire and now they have one ugly flat-black duckling standing out among the other three "pretty" tires.
Wheel Center Caps
Time to go shopping.
But what exactly am I shopping for? What do I tell Google or Yahoo that I want? Well, let's cut through the confusion and have a quick primer for the average car owner. We'll go through the different components and key words for the parts that spin around inside those beautiful Firestone, Pirelli, or Goodyear tires.
Tires -
As the old expression goes, "This is where the rubber meets the road."
The tire is literally the rubber portion of those "rollie things" that help our cars cruise down the road. A special machine forces the tire onto the wheel, forming a seal that allows the tire to hold air under pressure. This system replaced the first crude solid rubber tires and subsequently gave cars a much smoother ride over bumps and potholes.
It is very important to read owner manuals and maintain proper air pressure in your tires. Improperly inflated tires can not only be a safety hazard, but can also effect non-safety issues, such as gas mileage and wear.
Wheels & Rims -
These two parts are essentially the same thing. The "middle part" of the tire, wheels and rims are bolted directly to the hub using lug nuts.
Wheels and rims have many names attached to them, including OEM, Chrome, Custom, Factory, Original, Stock, Aluminum, Steel, Mag and Alloy. Each of these names describes a specific type of wheel or rim by where it was made, or the type of material it was made from. As an example, an OEM wheel or rim is made by the Original Manufacturer, like Ford, Toyota or Chevrolet. Custom wheels and rims are typically made by after-market companies in a staggering variety of styles. (Such as the "spinners" now popular on customized cars.) Aluminum wheels are, of course, made out of an aluminum alloy material and Steel wheels out of steel.
If rims and wheels are the same part, why do we need two names?
Think of it this way: One is just "fancier" than the other. Your everyday family car will most likely have plain steel wheels. (The flat-black kind that most people consider ugly.)
A street rod or custom truck will usually sport fancy "rims." Rims typically have a high chrome finish that is considered more pleasing to the eye than plain steel rims. Car and truck owners don't just choose rims for function, they buy rims to make a statement about who they are and how much they care about their car.
Hubcaps -
The true purpose of the hubcap is to cover the hub portion of the wheel. (The part the lug nuts screw onto.) A hub is usually about 2 to 10 inches in diameter. Hubcaps have many other names, including Center Caps, Wheel Caps and Dog Dishes. Since the early 1900's, hubcaps have snapped into place using clips on the back side of the caps that basically use a force fit to hold them in place. A good bump can easily dislodge a cap held on by clips and suddenly you have an Unidentified Rolling Object bouncing along beside your car.
Some newer models of hubcaps have switched to fake plastic lug nuts that screw onto the real lug nuts and hold the cap against the hub. The downside to this system is that the plastic threads easily get cross-threaded and no longer put pressure against the cap, allowing it to fall off. Another U-R-O sighting on the freeway!
Wheel Covers -
The difference between wheel covers and hubcaps is probably the most confusing area for the average car owner. Wheel covers are larger than hubcaps and do exactly what their name implies. They cover the entire wheel, not just the center hub.
Generally, manufacturers like Ford, Nissan and Mazda build their automobiles using a steel wheel described above. These are inexpensive and easy to make on a mass scale. Steel wheels are strong and provide great service, but flat-black steel is not exactly the most eye-catching style. This is where the wheel cover comes to the rescue. It covers the "ugly" steel wheel, giving your car or truck that little extra sparkle without having to shell out the big bucks for custom rims.

The wheel cover first came into existence in the late 1940's, appearing on just a few American-made autos like Buick, Chrysler and Dodge. In 1984, Honda debuted a new wheel cover design that was held on by the actual steel lug nuts that came with the wheel. Clearly a superior design, it was quickly adopted by other manufacturers. In fact, the design is so dependable, Honda still uses it to this day.
Hopefully, this quick lesson has removed a bit of confusion for the average car owner out there. The next time you send an Unidentified Rolling Object bouncing down the offramp, don't sweat it. You don't have to take all 4 wheels of your car to pop out the center caps... For less than bucks, you can remove all 4 in about 5 minutes... Once removed, simply peel the Velcro tape of your caps. The tapes adhesive comes of easy since it hasn't cured yet. No damage too to your caps! TIP: If adhesive is left behind, simply just use the existing tape you pulled off to dab and lift the remaining sections of adhesive.
